Juror's Statements Pennsylvania Watercolor Society 2013

Juror of Selection Comment:

I love the painting process.  For me, the journey is the best part.  Congratulations to those who are included in the show.  Savor the moment.  Artists not included, should not lose heart.  Art is very personal and I must judge through my eyes.  It is only one opinion.  Paint what you love and know. With desire and hard work, great things are possible.  Paint and try again!

I look for strong design, color and content. I look for technical skill. I look to see if a painting captures the essence of the subject.  I look for work I would like to have painted.  Sometimes, an honest effort from the heart can be more appealing, even with technical faults. I try hard to have a balanced show.

Judging is always difficult.  I view the images many, many times over the course of a week, in this case weeks. This particular show had outstanding paintings entered and choosing the entrants was extremely difficult.  Sadly, very good paintings had to be left behind due to venue restraints.  In the end, I chose paintings that kept drawing drew me in for a closer look.

I was honored to serve as Juror of Selection for the Pennsylvania Watercolor Society.  Thank you for selecting me. I hope you enjoy the show.

Juror of Awards Comments:

I was honored and pleased to sift the numerous qualities of the Pennsylvania Watercolor Society’s 34th Annual Exhibition. The paintings were displayed at their best in the handsome Cary Art Gallery. The Gallery itself is a jewel set in the sparkling town of Warren. The paintings spoke to me in the many accents of watercolor’s voices. The selected painters, the Watercolor Society, and all those awarded should take a bow. I hope that you, the gallery visitor will be as appreciative as was I. Appreciation is the only proper handle by which we come to art.
